The key to understanding the walks proposed

Le gite qui proposte riguardano essenzialmente le Dolomiti ed in particolare la Valle d’Ampezzo, di cui sono indicati i principali gruppi di montagne. Si è poi “allargato” il campo ad altre aree limitrofe e non come Svizzera, specialmente l’Engadina ma anche la zona del Vallese di Crans; l’Abruzzo o meglio il Gran Sasso; l’Etna). Le gite sono state tutte effettivamente svolte da chi le descrive, cosicchè sono frutto di esperienza personale (l’A. è nato nel 1963).

Le gite su questo sito si apprezzano meglio se si leggono con una cartina dei luoghi, ove si può seguire il percorso descritto. Per ogni gita  viene specificata la lunghezza (in termini di tempo) e la difficoltà; viene indicato il percorso (per la sua comprensione è necessaria una cartina della zona che indichi i sentieri, individuabili con il segnale colorato bianco e rosso ed il numero, oppure con gli “ometti”), la data di effettuazione della gita, e viene fornita una VALUTAZIONE (soggettiva, e che va considerata come tale e dunque adattata a ciascuno e)  che deve essere ben considerata prima di effettuare la gita.

Per la lunghezza sono indicate le ore di cammino effettivo orientative, con un buon passo; da considerare in più i tempi di sosta e di trasferimento per giungere all’inizio della gita.

It’s better to have a map to compare to this website and better undestand the places. The walks proposed are mainly in the Italian Dolomites and in particular the Ampezzo Valley (Veneto, North East of Italy) and neighboring areas (but also other areas, as Switzerland or Abruzzo). Every walks is really done by the A. (born in the 1963). For each excursion the length (in time) and the difficulty are specified. The routes are also described (although to ucnderstand them properly a map of the area is required to find the paths, identifiable by white/red signals and numbers, or otherwise “omini”, i.e. piles of stones) and classified according to their level of difficulty; valuation (that are subjective, and should be considered as such and therefore adapted to each) should be taken into consideration before making any excursion. As regards the length, the time indicated is for walking at a fast pace; you also need to consider the time taken for stops and for getting to the start of the walk.

Per la difficoltà sono state individuate cinque tipologie:

gite “bambinabili”, cioè adatte anche a bimbi piccoli (da 0 –sulle spalle- a 5 anni), di breve durata e dislivello minimo;

gite “per tutti”, cioè per chiunque voglia fare un’escursione in montagna per approcciarsi all’ambiente ovvero per non faticare eccessivamente (è inutile dire che in montagna servono scarpe apposite e uno zaino con –almeno- acqua e giacca wind stopper/water resistant; serve anche la cartina dei sentieri dell’area);

– sentiero ferrato è un sentiero per lo più esposto e con qualche passaggio che richiede attenzione ed un minimo di tecnica alpinistica, nel quale ci si deve legare con cordino e moschettone alla corda di acciaio già presente sul cammino. Si deve essere attrezzati [= set da ferrata, che consiste di imbragatura, 2 moschettoni e cordini con dissipatore;  caschetto, importante anche per i sassi la cui caduta è facilitata dall’affollamento estivo delle ferrate; guanti, utili per tenere meglio la corda spesso fredda, bagnata ed alcune volte sfilacciata); si consiglia allenamento, un certo livello di esperienza e capacità tecnica, oltre ad assenza di vertigini.

As regards difficulty, we have identified five categories:
– walks “for children”, i.e. suitable for small children (from 0- on an adult’s shoulders – to 5 years), short and with minimal up or down sections;
– walks “for everybody”: i.e. for anyone wanting to hike in the mountains in order to get close to nature without getting too tired (needless to say, in the mountains you need suitable footwear and a backpack with -at least- water and a water and wind resistant jacket; you also need a map of the footpaths in the area);
– a “guided path“ has steep drops and some sections requiring attention and a minimum of climbing technique, where you need to be tied -with a body harness, straps, and karabiner- to the steel cable attached to the rock. You need to be equipped [= ferrata-set, which consists of body harness, two karabiners and straps; a helmet, important not least for protecting against stones falling from above owing to other people; gloves, useful for holding the rope, which is often  cold, wet and sometimes frayed); I recommend training, a certain level of experience and technical expertise, and a head for heights.

via ferrata pur avendo lo stesso tipo di corda fissa già presente sul percorso come per i sentieri ferrati, ha delle difficoltà maggiori perché si necessita di tecnica alpinistica (cioè bisogna arrampicare) e spesso la salita è verticale e molto esposta. Ovviamente si deve essere attrezzati [= set da ferrata, che consiste di imbragatura, 2 moschettoni e cordini con dissipatore;  caschetto, importante anche per i sassi la cui caduta è facilitata dall’affollamento estivo delle ferrate; guanti, utili per tenere meglio la corda spesso fredda, bagnata ed alcune volte sfilacciata); si consiglia un certo allenamento, un buon livello di esperienza e capacità tecnica, oltre ad assenza di vertigini. Per chi è alle prime esperienze si consiglia una guida locale;

– le gite che non hanno le indicazioni appena descritte, sono gite che per la loro lunghezza (maggiore o uguale a cinque ore di cammino effettivo) o per qualche difficoltà tecnica o per il maggiore impegno fisico che richiedono, non sono per tutti ma per chi ha già una certa esperienza ed allenamento.

– excursions that do not fit in any of the above categories and because of their length (> or = 5 hours walking) or technical difficulties, are not for everyone but for those who already have mountain experience and a good level of training.

La raccomandazione più importante è quella di non sottovalutare la montagna, di affrontare gite adatte al proprio livello, avendo attenzione al percorso ed alle difficoltà, essendo attrezzati (con adeguate scarpe, e, se necessaria, con imbragatura, cordini e moschettoni), mai pensando “tanto me la cavo”, vedendo prima il meteo considerando la lunghezza e la tipologia della gita, per non trovarsi a metà gita con un cambio repentino di tempo e quindi in difficoltà  …  e ricordando:  passeggiare semplicemente tra i boschi, o camminare più o meno a lungo, o superare difficoltà di percorsi attrezzati di vari livelli non è rilevante in sé ma in rapporto a sé stessi, perché  ciò che importa non è tanto cosa si fa, ma come lo si fa per godersi appieno la montagna.

The most important recommendations are to not underestimate the difficulty of the mountains, choose excursions suited to your level, be correctly equipped, never think “Anyway I’ll be OK,” be sure of the weather, consider the length and type of excursion, and remember that the important thing is not what you do but how you do it if you want to fully enjoy the mountains.
